LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville nonprofit is using live music to raise money and awareness for local organizations as it wraps up its fourth concert season.
Dozens of people attended the latest “Music for a Purpose” concert series, which benefited Kentucky Refugee Ministries, or KRM, an organization that helps immigrant and refugee families build new lives in Kentucky.
For organizers, the goal goes beyond fundraising. It’s about connection.
“Building community and bringing music to all kinds of audiences, as well as raising funds and awareness for local nonprofits and charities all around town,” said Julia Cash, director of Music for a Purpose.
Cash said the organization is closing out its fourth season focused on creating positive change close to home.
“I came home to Louisville in 2021 during the pandemic, and I just felt like it was time for me to do something. It was time for me to create some positive change in the world and do something with my craft and my skills and use it to help others,” Cash said.
Kentucky Refugee Ministries provides housing support, employment assistance and help navigating the path to residency for families settling in the state.
John Koehlinger, executive director of Kentucky Refugee Ministries, said community partnerships like this help sustain that mission.
“Now more than ever it’s important that immigrants and refugees here know that there are members of this community who want them here, because there is a lot of fear,” said Koehlinger.
“We’re transitioning to community support, so the money is very helpful,” Koehlinger said. “We’re trying to strike a note of harmony and kind of uplift for not just immigrants and refugees but for all members of this community.”
Organizers said next year’s concert season is already confirmed, and they are planning ways to expand their impact across Louisville.
Nonprofits can apply for next season on the organization’s website.
