The My Hero Academia live-action movie has received a major production update, sparking renewed excitement for the long-awaited adaptation. First announced several years ago, the project has steadily moved forward under Netflix and Legendary Entertainment. With a new writer now officially on board, the film is taking its next significant step toward becoming a reality.
Jason Fuchs to write live-action My Hero Academia movie
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Jason Fuchs, known for Wonder Woman and Argylle, will pen the script. Shinsuke Sato, director of Bleach, Kingdom, and Alice in Borderland, remains attached to direct the feature. Legendary first announced its acquisition of the rights in October 2018, with Netflix coming aboard in December 2022.
The manga, created by Kohei Horikoshi, debuted in 2014 in Weekly Shonen Jump. It tells the story of Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without powers in a world where most people have “quirks.” After inheriting abilities from the world’s top hero, he enters U.A. High School, an academy for aspiring superheroes.
The manga concluded its serialization in August 2024. It has over 100 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling series of all time. The anime adaptation spans seven seasons and multiple films so far. Its final season will stream on Crunchyroll in October 2025.
Fuchs is serving as co-creator, co-showrunner, and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry, a prequel series to It. The show will debut in October on HBO and Max. His credits also include acting roles in It Chapter Two, La La Land, and The Good Wife.
Meanwhile, Sato has built a long career adapting manga to live-action. His credits include GANTZ, Death Note: New Generation, and Bleach. Netflix continues to position anime as a key part of its global strategy. My Hero Academia joins its slate alongside projects such as the live-action Gundam.
