Some celebrities have been candid about their sobriety struggles while experiencing ups and downs in the public eye.

Natasha Lyonne, for one, revealed in a January 2026 social media post that after 10 years of sobriety, she relapsed.

“Took my relapse public, more to come,” she wrote at the time.

Lyonne quit drinking in 2006 after seeing treatment at an inpatient rehab facility.

“It’s weird to talk about. I was definitely as good as dead, you know? A lot of people don’t come back,” she explained to Entertainment Weekly in 2012. “That makes me feel wary, and self-conscious. I wouldn’t want to feel prideful about it. People really rallied around me and pulled me up by my f***ing bootstraps.”

Natasha Lyonne has been an open book regarding her substance abuse struggles. “Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you’re not alone. Grateful for love and smart feet. Gonna do it for baby Bambo,” Lyonne wrote via X in January 2026, referring to the then-upcoming boxing movie she’s writing and directing. “Stay […]

Years later, Lyonne noted that she has “no problem” speaking about her past struggles.

“The truth is, at the back of that addiction are feelings that so many of us have, that don’t go away. Isn’t everyone entitled to a moment of existential breakdown in a lifetime?” she told The Guardian in 2017. “Adulthood is making peace with being kind to oneself when a response to life that’s so much more organic and immediate would be to self-destruct.”

Lyonne isn’t the only star who has publicly discussed her addiction. Keep scrolling to see what other celebs have said about relapsing:

After her initial January 2026 social media post revealing her relapse, Lyonne followed up with a few other messages.

“Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you’re not alone,” Lyonne wrote. “If no one told ya today, I love you. No matter how far down the scales we have gone, we will see how our experience may help another. Keep going, kiddos. Don’t quit before the miracle. Wallpaper your mind with love. Rest is all noise and baloney.”

AJ McLean

The Backstreet Boys member discussed his sobriety journey in July 2025 after several relapses throughout his career.

McLean told People that he’s in “the best head space I’ve ever been in my life,” at the time. “I’m sticking this one out all the way. It’s a daily thing. But I have finally done what has been suggested amongst the sober community, and my life has flipped in a positive way.”

Jax Taylor

Taylor went to rehab a second time in 2024, following a brief relapse after his first inpatient stay.

“The first time, I kind of put up a little bit of a fight,” Taylor said on Bravo producer Alex Baskin’s “Hot Mic” podcast in March 2025, noting that the second time he “didn’t put up a fight.”

Kelly Osbourne

In April 2021, Osbourne revealed that she relapsed after four years of sobriety.

“This is a little hard for me to talk about, but I’ve always promised you that I will always be honest with you about where I’m at and what’s going on in my road to recovery,” she wrote on social media at the time. “I relapsed. Not proud of it. But I am back on track.”

Osbourne added, “I’ve learned it truly is just one day at a time. And I just want to tell you guys the truth because I never, ever want to lie to you. Thank you so much for your support and your love.”

Dax Shepard

The “Armchair Expert” podcast host was sober for 16 years before he briefly relapsed in 2020 on Vicodin.

“I was high at the meeting having people tell me they admire my sobriety,” Shepard recalled on his podcast at the time. “It was the worst thing in the world.”

Several of Hollywood’s biggest stars have been candid about their sobriety journeys over the years. Jason Wahler

The Hills alum has been candid about his relapse a few times during his sobriety journey. In February 2020, the reality star said he had “another slip,” explaining that body image issues are at the root of his relapses.

Demi Lovato

The former Disney Channel star has discussed her addiction journey at length. Lovato experienced a public relapse in 2018 after six years of sobriety, which led to an eventual overdose.

During a 2020 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the singer said that she “asked for help” when her eating disorder relapsed, which led to her other struggles returning.

“I didn’t receive the help that I needed,” she told DeGeneres, noting that this response triggered her “abandonment” issues.

“I felt completely abandoned. So I drank,” she shared. “And that night I went to a party and there was other stuff there, and it was only three months before I ended up in the hospital with an O.D.”

Keith Urban

Following his 2006 marriage to Nicole Kidman, the singer relapsed and went into treatment for a second time.

“We got married in June 2006 and barely four months into our marriage, my addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens,” he said in 2024, noting that Kidman “pushed through every negative voice” and “chose love.”
