The country music singer was completely shocked after he found out that tens of thousands of euro was swindled out of a fan by a scammer posing as him – they got the police involved
Nathan Carter has revealed that around €80,000 was stolen from one of his fans by a fraudster pretending to be him.
The country music star is aware that scammers often pose as him in order to target his fans on social media and ask for money.
One of the most serious cases of his was when a woman in the UK had €80,000 scammed from her as she thought she was sending the real Nathan Carter money.
“There have been about 10 of them that I know of who have lost money in the scams over the last five or six years,” the Wagon Wheel singer said.
“The fraudsters are pretending to be me and they’re appealing for money for projects such as work on my house or to fund a new album.
“It’s messages like, ‘I’m not gigging that much at the minute and I need a bit of a help out.’”
Speaking about the woman who was defrauded out of €80,000, he told the Irish Independent: “The family contacted us on numerous occasions and we got the police involved over there. The poor lady wouldn’t believe it wasn’t me she was chatting to. It was horrendous.
“I’ve put up loads of warnings on social media through the years urging people to please be aware of fake social media accounts pretending to be myself.
“We stressed that ‘Nathan will never contact you for money or ask you to send personal bank details’. This is an ongoing issue, not just for me but for other entertainers as well.”
Nathan isn’t the only country music star who’s image has been used to scam innocent fans, with stars like Daniel O’Donnell and Lisa McHugh often warning their fans about fraudsters posing as them on social media.
“People think its me they are talking to on Facebook and its very plausible. A lot of the time (the scam) is that I am going to meet them and they are going to come away with me. They send on thousands,” Daniel O’Donnell told the Sunday World last year.
“I know of one particular woman in America that got caught up in this. A lot of people are vulnerable and there are people who believe that. Sometimes people hang on to the strangest thread, no matter how weak it is.”
“They are the people who fall prey to the scammers and they are sending the money, which they think is to me because this is the way it to going to work.”
