R&B powerhouse Ne-Yo brought the house down at the Grand Ole Opry during his debut performance on Nov. 20, blending beloved classics with fresh country flair.

The Grammy-winning singer took the Opry stage for the first time Thursday evening, serenading the crowd and bringing out special guests. He delivered a mix of fan-favorite hits and new material, including his new country-inspired single.

The R&B hitmaker performed his 2006 smash hit “So Sick”— just one day shy of the song’s 20-year anniversary —along with his rendition of Rascal Flatts’ 2004 classic “Bless the Broken Road.”

“First and foremost, I want to thank the Grand Ole Opry for allowing me to be here. This is a huge moment. This is a bucket list moment for me. I had no idea how I was going to do it, because I’m not a country artist, but I told myself at some point I’m going to make it to the Grand Ole Opry stage,” he said after receiving a warm welcome to the stage.

During his set, Ne-Yo also brought country duo The War and Treaty, blending their vocals together to cover the Rascal Flatts’ song.

Throughout his set, he commanded the room and drew the crowd into each song as they sang along and answered every performance with loud cheers and applause. Before leaving the stage, he closed with his country-influenced single “Simple Things,” performed a day ahead of its official release.

“I’ve been a country music fan for as long as I can remember. It started with my mom,” he said. “So, next year I’m dropping a country-inspired album. But tomorrow, I’m dropping my first single from said project.”

Dailey & Vincent, Tyler Braden, Clay Walker, Neal McCoy and The War and Treaty were amongst those to perform. Holly Williams also hit the stage, bringing out special guest Gwyneth Paltrow.

Ne-Yo’s Opry debut came a day after he attended 59th annual Country Music Association Awards, for the first time, at Nashville’s Bridgestone arena. He was also one of the presenters of the night, sharing a stage with Gretchen Wilson as they read off the Vocal Duo of the Year.

With nearly two decades in the game and credits for icons like Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo’s legacy is already stacked, and now he’s leaning even further into a genre that seems to fits him seamlessly.
