Singer-songwriter néomí has released her latest single “Close” in tandem with the announcement of her upcoming EP Crunchy, Sad and Strangely Happy. Leaning more into the pop side of her folk-pop sound, néomí’s new single shows a relationship long over but still without an end in sight.
“Close” begins with néomí’s usual acoustic guitar at the centre of the mix, but quickly gives ways to a pop tonality once the first verse settles in. Electric keys filling up the song’s soundscape are what gives “Close” this pop feeling, but the keys’ cooler tone also gives a soothing contrast to the sharper elements of the song. These sharper elements can be found in the percussion-heavy drum kit and tightly-strung acoustic guitar.
As “Close” continues, it adds electric guitars and synth leads, allowing for a easy increase in energy. Despite its electronic sounds, “Close” feels right at home within néomí’s stripped-back and intimate musical style.
néomí explained the song is “about an unhealthy form of love… you can’t live without each other so that’s the reason why you have to stay close.” In the song’s chorus, this unhealthy attachment can be heard clearly with the line “our love will tear us apart because you love to make love to someone else.” In a song that makes you question if you really are in love, the songwriter’s repetition of the word feels like a punch in the gut.
“Close” is set to feature on néomí’s upcoming EP, Crunchy, Sad and Strangely Happy, releasing on September 18 via Nettwerk. If you’re wanting to hear the new music live, néomí will be returning to the road later this year with tour dates across Europe. Ticketing information can be found here.
