Ross Valory is opening a new chapter for ‘All Of The Above.’
The acclaimed original Journey bassist and songwriter will release a refreshed and remastered edition of his debut solo album on August 21 through OID Music. Originally released digitally in 2024, the collection will now be available for the first time on vinyl and CD, bringing Valory’s solo work to physical formats fans have been waiting for.
The updated edition also includes a brand-new instrumental composition, “City Lights,” accompanied by a cinematic new music video that travels through different eras of New York City. The song adds another dimension to a project that showcases the breadth of Valory’s songwriting and musicianship.
For “City Lights,” Valory assembled an accomplished lineup featuring Eric Levy, Steve Smith, Bobby Strickland, Stevie “Keys” Roseman, and the late Mic Gillette. Their performances help shape an evocative instrumental piece inspired by romance, nightlife, and the energy of the city after dark.
“‘City Lights’ is really about people out and about in the city, possibly in the rain, looking for and finding romance,” says Valory. “It’s just the simple enjoyment of nightlife and romance…the adventure, the excitement, the spontaneity. Just being out on the town.”
Valory also sees a connection between “City Lights” and his previously released composition “Nightflower.”
“‘City Lights’ and the previously released ‘Nightflower’ are really sister songs,” he explains. “They both have the flavor of the big city at night.”
The video continues Valory’s creative partnership with director Michael Cotten, who previously created visuals for every track on the album, including “Touched, Pt. II,” “Tomland,” “Wild Kingdom,” “Windmill,” “Nightflower,” “Low Rider,” “Incident At Neshabur/Señor Blue,” and “No One Wins A War.”
Produced by Valory and co-produced by Eric Levy and Jacob Stowe, ‘All Of The Above’ presents a wider musical canvas than listeners may know from his work with Journey. Across its 10 tracks, Valory explores instrumental rock, jazz-infused arrangements, and richly textured compositions while performing keyboards, guitar, and multiple basses.
More than five decades into an extraordinary career, Valory continues to explore new creative territory. ‘All Of The Above’ highlights a musician stepping forward with a fully realized artistic vision, one shaped by experience, curiosity, and a lifelong dedication to the craft.
