Netflix boss Ted Sarandos has showered Meghan Markle with praise, calling her documentary with Prince Harry about their Royal Family exit “successful in every measure.”
His remarks on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast represent the first time the Netflix chief has publicly discussed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since they extended their deal with the streaming giant.
Mr Sarandos’s glowing assessment of Meghan also follows the lackluster performance of her cooking show’s second season, With Love, which struggled to capture a broad viewership. The news emerges as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle feel ‘betrayal’ at how Royal Family behaved with Trump.
During the podcast, Netflix’s top executive lauded Meghan for possessing “remarkable influence” and commended her capacity to generate sellouts of consumer products showcased in her program as he reaffirmed his backing for the polarizing duo.
Her culinary series, which debuted in March, is linked to her e-commerce venture As Ever, which markets wine, preserves, and additional food items. Mr Sarandos revealed: “One thing we learned early with Meghan… she has remarkable influence-remarkable. So when we did the documentary on her and Harry, the trailer, when we ran the trailer announcing it, people… hundreds of people… broke down every frame of the trailer.”
Netflix holds an equity stake in her digital marketplace, securing a share of the revenues.
Detailing the collaboration, the Netflix executive explained: “She has incredible power and influence. So that for me, it’s like okay well how can we enable this to be a more holistic thing. So that’s what that relationship is about.”
He proceeded to lavish praise on Harry and Meghan’s bombshell Netflix documentary which premiered in December 2022. “And by the way, the documentary itself,” Mr Sarandos added, “was also one of the most watched documentaries we’ve ever had.
“So it was very it was successful in every measure. Now I don’t think that you can have a consumer products business if you don’t have a great entertainment business. So that’s got to come first.”
