(WDNews) — Netflix has reached a $72 billion agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing together two of the biggest forces in film and television.
Announced Friday, the deal combines Warner’s powerhouse brands — including HBO, HBO Max, DC Studios, and Warner Bros. Pictures — with Netflix’s globally dominant streaming platform known for hits like “Stranger Things,” “Squid Game,” and “Bridgerton.”
Netflix said the merger will expand viewing options by blending its library with Warner’s extensive catalog, adding iconic titles such as The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz, and the entire DC Universe to its lineup.
The company did not disclose what the acquisition means for HBO Max subscribers. According to Forbes, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told investors that HBO and HBO Max will continue operating as standalone services for now. Fellow co-CEO Greg Peters added that the company has “a lot of options to figure out how you package things in different ways” moving forward.
The acquisition marks one of the largest studio purchases in Hollywood history and signals a major shift in the streaming landscape.
