Sam Shaw (Castle Rock, Masters of Sex) is the showrunner and exec producer on Kennedy
Netflix has commissioned a historical drama exploring the triumphs and tragedies of the Kennedy family, based on Swedish-American historian Fredrik Logevall’s 2020 book JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956.
The streaming giant handed an eight-episode order to the Michael Fassbender-led project, titled Kennedy, which is being set up to run across multiple seasons. Chernin Entertainment, which sits inside Peter Chernin’s international studio The North Road Company, is producing.
Per the logline, the project “reveals the intimate lives, loves, rivalries and tragedies that shaped the most iconic dynasty in modern history, and helped create the world we live in today.”
Taking place in the 1930s, season one will chart the “improbable ascent of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children, including rebellious second son Jack, who struggles to escape the shadow of his golden boy older brother.” German-Irish actor Fassbender, whose credits include spy drama The Agency and thriller feature Black Bag, will play Joe Kennedy Sr.
Sam Shaw (Manhattan, Castle Rock, Masters of Sex) is the showrunner and executive producer, with Thomas Vinterberg (Festen, The Hunt, Another Round) directing.
For Netflix, the project takes it further into the historical drama space following The Crown, which chronicled the lives of the British royals through the lens of the life of Queen Elizabeth II, and The Empress, a German series based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
Chernin Entertainment is producing two other upcoming series for Netflix: revenge drama Man on Fire and period adaptation The Age of Innocence. The company is also behind Apple TV series Chief of War, Truth Be Told and See.
