Season 4 of the Netflix series Stranger Things made viewers realize that an episodic TV series can match the production value and cinematic scope of blockbuster films. The fourth edition, especially the finale, was praised for its epic storytelling and stunning visuals, prompting fans to call for the Season 5 finale to be released on the big screen.
Initially, Netflix didn’t want to release the series finale on the big screen. However, it seems the streamer has changed course and is now planning a possible theatrical release for the finale of the fifth season.
According to a report by Puck’s Matthew Belloni, Netflix is now reportedly thinking of taking the Season 5 finale of Stranger Things to theatres. The report suggested that the streaming platform will be showcasing the 2-hour-long episode at “AMC theatres and other theatre chains” on New Year’s Eve. It is worth noting that the finale is set to premiere on Netflix on the same date (December 31).
The report comes almost a week after the Duffer Brothers revealed in an interview how they wanted the concluding episode of the fifth and final season to be in cinema halls. At the time, Netflix didn’t feel the need to do so because people had seen the show in large numbers on the streamer and hadn’t stopped them from talking about it on the internet, in person, and on social media. In his report, Belloni explained that their comments were recorded weeks before the deal was in place.
Although the deal isn’t final, he didn’t shy away from saying that the finale will be shown in theatres. If this does happen, it would be a significant moment in the show’s history. A lot of people, including critics, believe that the Duffer Brothers haven’t left any stone unturned to make Stranger Things a magnum opus, and Netflix might have realized that it has the potential to provide box office success as well.
Volume One of Stranger Things season 5 will arrive on November 27 and will consist of four episodes. Meanwhile, the second volume will be available for streaming from December 25. The finale of the fifth and final edition will premiere on New Year’s Eve, marking the end of an era for fans who have followed the journey since the very beginning.
