It was a no-brainer for New Edition to put together a tour with longtime friends and fellow hitmakers Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton.
Figuring the show out, however, was another matter.
“There’s so many songs, so many hits. It could go on for five or six hours,” explains Ricky Bell, who co-founded New Edition in 1998 in Boston and also started Bell Biv DeVoe with group mates Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe. “It was quite challenging, but it’s a process.”
The New Edition Way Tour is an in-the-round affair that weaves the three acts together throughout the night rather than presenting one at a time. “We always want to bring our fans just a new experience, something we haven’t done yet,” says Bell, 58. “You have three basically headline acts … so we said, ‘Let’s bring it together as one act.’ You never know what song, what artist is coming next. We worked really hard on the sequence of the show.”
They collaborate with each other throughout the night, as well, and also begin the show together singing “We Going Out Tonight,” a brand new song by Bell that’s been recorded and will be released later this year as the first fresh New Edition single in 22 years (not counting the other group members backing Johnny Gill on 2016’s “This One’s For Me and You”).
New Edition is, of course, loaded up with hits — group chart-toppers such as “Candy Girl,” “Cool It Now,” “Mr. Telephone Man,” “Can’t Stand the Rain” as well as solo favorites — and Bell hopes fans enjoy the trip down memory lane as much as he and his mates do.
“It’s kinda like we’re taking you on a journey,” he says, “through your life, ’cause you’re gonna hear some songs and ‘Omigod, I forgot about this one. Where was I when I heard that?’ It takes you back to high school, middle school, everywhere in your life. That’s what we try to do.
“And now, especially with social media, our songs are being introduced to a whole new generation. We do meet-and-greets every night, and we have parents, even grandparents, bringing their kids, and the kids are just as excited as they are. There’s no way we could’ve known it would have this impact 40 years later.”
