New Line is in early talks for a prequel to Weapons, its buzzy hit horror film from writer-director Zach Cregger, which opened over the weekend, Deadline has confirmed.
Plot details are under wraps, and it’s unclear in what capacity Cregger would participate in the project, as it’s very early days here, and sources indicated that he has two films lined up to take on next. He’s currently prepping his Resident Evil film for Sony, and it’s expected that he’ll then look to take on an original called Flood, we’re told.

Following up the 2022 horror film Barbarian that put him on the map, Creggers’ horror mystery Weapons tells the story of 17 third-graders who vanish from their homes at exactly 2:17 a.m., and the confusion and fear resulting from their disappearances in the town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania. Julia Garner stars as Justine Gandy, the third-grade teacher who loses her class, with Josh Brolin as a father whose child is among the missing, and Alden Ehrenreich as a local cop. Others in the cast include Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Cary Christopher.
Released by Warner Bros on August 8, the film has been both a critical and commercial success, topping the box office in its opening weekend with approximately $42.5 million domestically. As of today, it’s grossed over $81 million worldwide.
Cregger’s adaptation of the video game Resident Evil is slated for release on September 18.
