A new trailer for Ryan Murphy’s FX series Love Story depicts the tumultuous romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
The trailer opens like the beginning of a fairy tale romance. John (Paul Kelly) is the son of President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Naomi Watts) and is considered by the press to be America’s “most eligible bachelor.” That bachelor status changes, however, when he meets Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon), a fashion publicist for Calvin Klein in New York City. Sparks fly, and soon the two are head-over-heels for each other.
In the trailer for the series, which was inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s nonfiction book Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John showers Carolyn with roses and pulls her into alleys for clandestine kissing. However, it soon becomes apparent to Carolyn that dating one of the most adored men in America is not exactly easy. Between the hounding press and the pressures that come with being a member of the Kennedy family, Carolyn soon realizes that the two are from different worlds.
“There’s a lot of trade-offs being with someone like that,” Kelly Klein (Leila George), the wife of Carolyn’s boss, Calvin Klein (Alessandro Nivola), warns in the trailer. “Shiny people, they belong to everyone.”
The trailer also teases real-life moments from the couple’s romance, including their famous fight in Washington Square Park in 1996, captured by paparazzi.
“It’s not a question of if I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” Carolyn says. “It’s a question of if I’m cut out to be ‘Mrs. JFK Jr.’”
But as we know, Carolyn eventually takes on that title in 1996 — about two years after they began dating. The trailer shows a quick shot of her wearing a wedding veil while riding shotgun in a convertible.
John and Carolyn remained married until they both died in a private plane crash in 1999. The crash also claimed the life of Carolyn’s sister Lauren (played by Sydney Lemmon in the show).
Not everyone in the Kennedy family is happy about the depiction of the couple’s romance. Jack Schlossberg, son of John’s sister, Caroline Kennedy (played by Grace Gummer in the show), called out the series in July 2025 for what he described as profiting off his family. He said that the Kennedy family was not consulted about the show, but that there is nothing they can do about it.
“I hope those making this show about him take seriously what he stood for in his life, all that he achieved in it, and that they donate some of the profits [from] what they’re making to the John F. Kennedy Library,” Schlossberg wrote in an Instagram post. “For the record, I think admiration for my uncle John is great. What I don’t think is great is profiting off of it in a grotesque way.”
Love Story premieres on FX on Feb. 12.
