Best Australian and New Zealand Music of the Week: BOY SODA, WHO SHOT SCOTT, Inertia and More

With Christmas now very nearly upon us, we’ve added another ten fresh tracks for our Discovery Playlist, available on Spotify and Apple Music — including one premiere from earlier in the week. Our track of the week is “Retaliate” from Cry Club.

A ferocious burst of electro-punk energy, “Retaliate” finds Cry Club in full fight mode as they gear up for the release of their newly announced third album  , High Voltage Anxiety, arriving March 27, 2026. Described by vocalist Heather Riley as a “torch-and-pitchfork party soundtrack”,  the track channels fury, frustration and biting social commentary into something wildly cathartic — a perfect centrepiece for this week’s playlist. It’s a cracking follow-up to their most recent single, “This, Forever”.

We are obsessed with the Deluxe edition of the Megaflower album from Full Flower Moon Band, released earlier in the week. One of the many highlights is “Smoking”, featuring Drum Mums. Infused with wry, Aussie humour, it’s catchy and deftly constructed. Part-time/social smokers will definitely resonate. “I quit smoking it makes all the difference / You know me… I just smoke on the weekends”. Check out the video as well.

Coffs Harbour newcomer Day Drunk delivers a beautifully intimate moment with “Nothing Was In Your Way” — a woozy, lo-fi folk track built entirely in his home studio, where soft fingerpicking, close-mic’d vocals and tape-warmed harmonies wrap around a lyric that quietly confronts the fear of being left behind as someone you love grows into a new chapter. It’s a delicate, emotionally articulate release that firmly introduces him as a compelling new voice in confessional folk-pop.

Belgian up-and-comers Empty Head come in swinging with “Don’t Wanna”, a fierce, groove-driven burst of punked-up energy that channels modern frustration into something defiantly fun. Fuelled by sharp lyrics and racing guitars, it’s a cathartic, dance-ready release that captures a band reminding us of Viagra Boys, Idles, and our own Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Rumour has it that a debut album might be appearing in 2026.

“Supermarket Woman” is the debut single from Northern Rivers all-new all-female punk rock band Royal Ratbags. The playful track is according to the band, a ‘celebration of the simple joy of being fabulous in the fluorescent glow of your local grocer’. It’s a hell of a lot of fun… a little bit chaotic… undeniably punk and just so compelling from the vocals, to the guitar work, thumping bass and that ending. There is, of course, a must watch music video too. You can catch the Royal Ratbags a handful of times before the new year; with the next opportunity coming on Dec 19th when they support DZ Deathrays at The Coolangatta Hotel in Queensland.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Saint Ergo this week releases “The Broken”, the first single from her debut album Lived Experience. You won’t find this one on our playlist though as it’s only being released on Bandcamp and physically; but it’s too good not to share with you all. Inspired by a Horace Walpole quote, “The Broken” is a stunning exploration of pain, resilience and tenderness, with soaring powerful vocals, beautiful instrumentation (that guitar part!), and emotive lyricism, all bookended by the sound of Melbourne trams and hustle. Gorgeous!

“Silver Tray” is the latest alt-country single from award-winning WA musician Finn Pearson and his band. The sanguine track captures the transition from reckless youth to the weight and responsibilities of adulthood, packing some deceptively emotional heft alongside dust kicking rhythms and swirling guitars. Or as Pearson describes it, ‘It sounds like having an existential crisis in an inner-city country bar. Not that I would ever personally do that… At all.’ WA readers can catch Pearson launching the single at Clancy’s Fremantle on Saturday 13th December. Tickets are available HERE.

Acclaimed Irish folk band Ye Vagabonds continue to tease their forthcoming album All Tied Together, out January 30th, with new single “The Flood”. If you’re in anyway familiar with Ye Vagabonds’ work, you’ll be unsurprised to discover that “The Flood” is yet another gem from the band, with a strong socially conscious message and immaculate musicianship throughout – this time with added fiddle! There’s a beautiful quality to the vocal which never fails to captivate.

Also added to the playlist this week is “Party With Ben” from musician and experimental pop producer Rusty Santos. The track is from his forthcoming 2026 solo album Pyscho Horses; and is an ode to the nightlife of NYC circa the 2000s. With layered acoustic guitars, electric bass, and a drum kit, there’s a bit of shoegazey vibe thanks in no small part to Santos’ ethereal vocals. Finally, we have added a premiere from earlier in the week – “They don’t make ’em like me anymore” from The Golden Gaytimes.
