This New Music Friday is exciting. This week’s biggest records include an anticipated punk record and a return from one of hip-hop’s great stars. Read on to view a complete list of top singles, EPs and albums out now.

The Best of New Music Friday:

J. Cole – The Fall-Off

Though it’s been five years since J. Cole released his most recent official studio album The Offseason, his latest venture The Fall-Off has been in the works since 2018. The closing track for Cole’s record KOD was called “1985 (Intro to The Fall Off).” Ever since, he’s continuously teased this record, saying it would be fiery and the “summit of his mountain.” Now a number of Cole’s fans are saying that The Fall-Of is the icon’s magnum opus.

The Fall-Off is a triumph by design. It’s a double album, and according to Cole, it’ll also be his last. The record’s first part is titled Disc 29, which Cole said tells a story of his return to his hometown at age 29. “A decade after moving to New York, accomplishing what would have seemed impossible to most, I was at a crossroads with the 3 loves of my life,” Cole said. They were his romantic interest, his craft and his city. The tone for this album is serious.

The record gets loose on its second part, Disc 39. “The Fall-Off Is Inevitable” is a song written to capture listener’s attentions, with Cole rapping about his entire life backwards from coffin to birth in a single unbroken reverse-chronology.

What proves that The Fall-Off is a triumph lies in the effort Cole is willing to give at age 41. Despite having it just about all a star could desire in terms of fame and acclaim, Cole writes and mixes his music as if he has something to prove. However, he already has the elements and style to show he’s an expert at his rap craft. J. Cole is an all-time great, and so is the quality of what is apparently his send-off.
