One of Spotify’s first strategic moves under its new co-CEOs is the claim that it will be giving its subscribers more agency over its algorithms. Now New Zealanders will be the first to experience what that means practically.
At his SXSW keynote this weekend, co-CEO Gustav Söderström announced plans for rollout of a new beta feature enabling people to ‘review and directly shape’ their Spotify taste profiles – the service’s understanding of their preferences.
We say ‘rollout’ but for now, it’s only New Zealand getting access to the feature “in the coming weeks” – and only for premium subscribers.
A video in Spotify’s blog post about the announcement shows how it will work, with a new ’Taste Profile’ option in the Spotify app’s profile menu.
Subscribers will see a summary paragraph of what Spotify knows/thinks they like, with a ‘Tell us more’ prompt box below it to give the algorithm a nudge.
“Flagging when your profile misses the mark—asking for more or less of a certain vibe, or simply sharing what you’re in the mood for,” as Spotify described it. The feature can also be used to affect its podcast recommendations.
