What happens with a faded boy-band member links up with up with a wedding singer who is past his prime?
That’s the premise of a new movie in the works that’s set to hit theaters next summer, Deadline reports, starring Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd, respectively.
Lionsgate is expected to release the John Carney-directed Power Ballad on June 5, 2026.
Carney, 53 — perhaps best known for helming the acclaimed 2007 film Once — co-wrote the project with Peter McDonald, Deadline also noted on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The movie reportedly centers on a past-his-prime wedding singer named Rick (Rudd) who meets fading boy-band star Danny (Jonas) during a gig. The two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves – even if it means risking everything he cares about.
The pic is billed as being a feel-good story about music, self-respect, friendship, and the price of ambition, according to Deadline. The supporting cast includes McDonald, 53, as well as Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
Jonas, 33, made headlines this month when he opened up to Esquire about what “terrifies” him about being a girl dad. While he and his wife Priyanka Chopra do their best to shield their 3-year-old from the downsides of fame, Jonas admits that he worries about how she may be treated in the future by fans and people online.
“There’s just a terrible amount of online trolls and pressures especially for young women. As a girl dad, I know that terrifies me,” he told the magazine.
Rudd, meanwhile, was one of many celebrities who attended his Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez‘s wedding last month. The billionaire pop star, 33, tied the knot with music producer Benny Blanco on Sept. 27 in Montecito, California.
