Nickelodeon is canceling its current animated series Dora and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as part of a major programming strategy overhaul, according to sources familiar with the decision.
Deadline reports that the upcoming seasons of both shows will be their last — information that has also been confirmed on background to KTLA.
Season 2 of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to premiere on Paramount+ in December before running on Nicktoons next year. The series is a spinoff of the 2023 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, itself a reboot of the 1984 comic franchise.
As for Dora, the fourth season is expected to debut on Paramount+ at a yet-to-be-announced date, followed by a linear run on Nick Jr. Deadline also reports that a fifth and final season has already been produced, though it’s unclear when — or if — those episodes will be released.
The current Dora series is a CG-animated reboot of the original Dora the Explorer, which aired from 2000 to 2014, with final unaired episodes released in 2019. The reboot premiered on Paramount+ in April 2024 and follows a younger Dora on new adventures.
The cancellations come amid the post-merger restructuring of Paramount and Skydance, which consolidated all Paramount linear networks and Nickelodeon Animation Studios into a new TV Media division overseen by Chair George Cheeks. In a memo to staff last week, cited by Deadline, Cheeks said the company would adopt a “more curated slate,” focusing resources on franchises such as SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, RuPaul’s Drag Race, South Park, Ms. Pat and The Daily Show.
The shakeup aligns with other recent programming changes across Paramount-owned networks. Last month, sources confirmed to KTLA that MTV canceled its long-running series Ridiculousness after 14 years and 46 seasons as the channel shifts toward new formats and refreshed programming.
Neither Dora nor Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was listed among Paramount’s priority linear brands, though both remain legacy Nickelodeon properties. Deadline reports that Paramount is exploring third-party licensing opportunities for the shows, similar to how other Nickelodeon series have been distributed on platforms such as Netflix.
