Nicole Richie is here for the Hilary Duff revival.
Richie, a 2000s star herself, took to Instagram stories Nov. 11 to congratulate Duff on her decision to return to music after a multi-year hiatus. Duff released her new single “Mature” earlier this month, marking a return to the studio a decade after her last album.
A bubbly, ’80s-tinged pop record, “Mature” sees Duff sing about her younger self dating someone older, before leaving such naivety behind. The track, a piece of “autofiction” according to a release, was co-written by Duff, 38, her husband, Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Matthew Koma, and singer-songwriter Madison Love.
“She looks like shе could be your daughter / Like me before I got smarter,” Duff sings at one point. “When I was flattered to hear you say / ‘You’re so mature for your age, babe.'”
Duff was romantically linked to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden when she was 16 and he was 25. He went on to marry Richie, with Duff later marrying Koma in 2019 after her split from her ex-husband, hockey player Mike Comrie.
While some listeners hypothesized that the new single was about Madden, Richie’s post proved there was no bad blood.
“‘Mature’ is not the word I would use to describe us, but regardless, this song is a BOP,” she wrote alongside a photo of her and Duff lying on the grass, laughing hysterically with both clad in black.
“It’s definitely about a brief experience that I had a long, long time ago,” Duff told Vogue about the song. “It was extremely therapeutic to write about things that a normal conversation doesn’t really give you the opportunity to.”
Duff’s return to music will be supplemented by an untitled docuseries from “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” director Sam Wrench. A release date and platform for the series have yet to be announced.
