There’s nothing much in common with Starling Marte and MJ Melendez except they’ve swapped uniforms this offseason via free agency. Marte will join the Kansas City Royals on a one-year deal. Melendez comes to the New York Mets on a split contract.
Melendez has been making some thunderous noise in Mets camp, blasting two home runs in one game. Not a longshot to make the Opening Day roster, but more so somewhere in the middle depending on a variety of circumstances, he’s a great fit for the Mets. They can demote him to start the year without passing him through waivers. He’s ideal depth for a team that could use it immediately even if his skillset is far from perfect.
Meanwhile, Marte gives the Royals an added veteran presence in their outfield, but maybe more so as a right-handed DH. After missing the playoffs in 2026, they’ll try to get back and do it with a guy whose reputation with the Mets confirmed he’s good to have around for no other reason than the positive influence he brings in the dugout and locker room.
MJ Melendez vs. Starling Marte is a conversation we never thought we’d have
Comparisons between the two are bound to happen. Melendez having a productive even abbreviated year with the Mets will have the Royals feeling like they gave up too soon. Marte showing signs of life, and maybe outperforming someone like Mark Vientos at the DH spot, will have Mets fans scrambling for hot takes about why he should have been re-signed. There will surely be some to suggest Marte would’ve been a better match over Jorge Polanco even if that’s just not true.
Melendez was a classic case of “time to move on” for the Royals. The Mets didn’t have the roster real estate to handle another year of Marte with the addition of Jorge Polanco as well as continued presence of Mark Vientos. David Stearns inherited him and tried to make the best of the situation with last year’s planned platoon with Jesse Winker which went sideways quickly. Luckily, Marte actually performed well against pitchers from both sides.
A veteran presence like Marte is something the Royals could certainly use. They just can’t get fooled into thinking he can actually play the outfield any longer. Finishing one game behind the Mets with 82 wins versus our 83, they were a more subtle letdown team. Finishing 4 games lower than the year prior when they were in the playoffs, their offseason has been relatively tame. Marte can have a significant role for them on and off the field. If he’s able to offer them a morale boost, we’ll have a better idea of how impactful those traits can actually be.
Melendez played in only 23 games for the Royals last year. Regarded as a top 50 prospect back in 2022, the Royals’ decision to move on from him despite the ability to stash him in the minors for at least another year is a bit telling about how they really feel.
The Mets letting Marte walk was more about structuring their roster in a way to allow flexibility. Melendez gives them that. He’s hardly considered a major candidate to contribute in 2026. The more he plays, the more something else has probably gone terribly wrong.
Worthwhile risks for both teams, each club can be happy with the outcome of this non-trade in free agency.
