Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla were formally welcomed at the White House Tuesday as they continue their historic visit to Washington DC.
The trip is intended to underscore the unity between the two longtime allies despite deep divisions over the Iran war.
After meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, the king gave a speech to a joint meeting of Congress, speaking about unity with the United States and the need to defend democratic values.
The king’s next stop will be New York City on Wednesday — and security will, undoubtedly, be tight.
Although there are no new specific threats to the city, heightened security will be in place for Wednesday’s events as a precaution.
If you are traveling Wednesday expect major road closures downtown and in Midtown. Hundreds of Secret Service agents will be joined by the FBI, NYPD and Port Authority officers as they they work to keep the royals safe in a high-threat environment.
Part of that planning includes having an operations center around the clock to coordinate with all partnering agencies – FBI, Police, and Fire – so information can be shared in real time.
From a Brooklyn facility,the Secret Service is preparing to roll a small army of agents to help protect the royals who will visit the 9/11 Memorial and meet with first responders as the 25th anniversary approaches.
They will also visit the New York Public Library and attend an event in Rockefeller Center.
