Country Music Hall of Famer and Oklahoma native Reba McEntire is celebrating the release of a new 30th anniversary edition of her hit album “Starting Over” via MCA.
Released Oct. 3, 1995, the album collected the powerhouse vocalist’s covers of 10 songs with personal significance to her, including her renditions of hits by Linda Ronstadt, The Supremes, Ray Price, Lee Greenwood, Crystal Gayle and more.
The album took its title from Dolly Parton’s 1980 country hit “Starting Over Again,” written by disco queen Donna Summer and her husband Bruce Sudano. It’s believed to be the first song penned by a Black woman to top the U.S. Hot Country Songs Chart in history.
The original 10-track collection closed with Reba’s heart-wrenching rendition of Glenn Campbell’s iconic ode “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” penned by legendary songwriter and Elk City native Jimmy Webb.
The 30th anniversary edition includes three bonus tracks with her versions of Don Williams’ enduring chart-topper “Tulsa Time;” the Motown classic “Heat Wave,” which Ronstadt recorded in 1975; and the Bob Montgomery-penned blues and country standard “Misty Blue,” which has been covered by the likes of Eddy Arnold, Dorothy Moore and Etta James.
In 1995, “Starting Over” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and quickly became a fan favorite. It has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Showcasing Reba’s versatility and passion, the album boasted a landmark lead single with “On My Own,” her cover of the Patti LaBelle-Michael McDonald duet that she turned into a four-woman collaboration with fellow country stars Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride and Linda Davis. It remains one of the most memorable moments of her storied run as an entertainment icon.
Reba even celebrated the album’s release, as well as what was then her 20-year music career, with a 1995 television special called “Reba: Starting Over” that aired on CBS.
The newly released 30th anniversary edition of “Starting Over,” with the three bonus tracks, is now available for streaming. Plus, Reba’s 1995 covers collection is available for the first time on vinyl as part of the anniversary re-release.
