The New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club is set to bring Oktoberfest back to the Riverfront Convention Center on Saturday, September 27, from 5 to 10 p.m. The event will feature performances by the “Little German Band and Dancers,” a steinholding contest, and the chance to participate in the lively chicken dance.
Rodger Allison, a member of the New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club, humorously described the dance, saying, “Well, I, I think it goes something like this,” as he demonstrated flapping his wings. “And then everybody joins in,” he added with a laugh.
The festival is not just about fun; it serves an important purpose. Funds raised will support student scholarships and the “Kicks for Kids” program. Deedra Durocher, another Rotary Club member, explained, “And we purchase about 300 to 325 pairs of new shoes every fall for elementary and middle school children throughout Craven County. I think there’s 29 schools that we contact.”
The festivities will kick off with the “Tapping of the Keg” ceremony on September 24 at Brewery 99 on Pollock Street. Tickets are priced at $35 in advance and $40 at the door, with discounts available for active duty military, veterans, and children.
