Olivia Wilde is speaking out for the first time on her former romance with Harry Styles.
The actress and director opened up to Alex Cooper on Thursday’s episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast and reflected on the backlash she received while dating Styles due to their age gap.
“Men, who are in positions of power, date younger women all the time, and everyone’s like… And? There’s no question,” host Alex Cooper highlighted. “What do you think was so triggering to people seeing you dating a man that they deemed you the position of power and the older woman?”
Wilde said she still can’t fully grasp it and it’s something she never understood, but “people were f—— pissed.”
The 42-year-old actress mused that some of the hate also stemmed from fans’ “parasocial relationship” with the “Watermelon Sugar” singer.
“It’s wild, because we had the loveliest relationship, like so sweet and so beautiful, and like, really actually very domestic and kind and lovely,” she added. “I think that we existed in this little bubble and the judgment never really got into that bubble, which was a miracle.”
The two met in 2020 on the set of her film “Don’t Worry Darling” and broke up nearly two years later. While both have moved on from the relationship, Wilde said she still has nothing but praise for Styles.
Wilde’s relationship with Styles followed her split from ex-fiancé and partner of 10 years, Jason Sudeikis, in 2020. She shares two children with the “Ted Lasso” star, son Otis, 12, and daughter Daisy, 9.
Their separation and subsequent child custody became tabloid fodder. During a viral moment in 2022, Wilde was served custody papers from Sudeikis while on stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to promote her film with Styles, “Don’t Worry Darling.”
The actress opened up about the “traumatizing” incident for the the first time on Cooper’s podcast.
It was “one of the most f—– up things I’ve went through,” she said. After the event, she said she went backstage and “completely dissolved into a puddle.”
Olivia Wilde talks about being a Knicks fan, hosting dinner parties and filming her new movie “The Invite.”
Wilde legally filed to dismiss the “Ted Lasso” star’s custody petition four months after incident, accusing Sudeikis of intentionally trying to “embarrass” her. She also criticized his “aggressive” serving tactics, which were “clearly intended to threaten me and catch me off guard,” Wilde said in her court filing.
But the custody drama didn’t stop there. The legal documents were later leaked to the public in March 2023, with Wilde’s rep telling E! News at the time that the leak was the “utmost breach of trust.”
When Cooper asked Wilde if she knew whether Sudeikis had intentionally served her the papers at CinemaCon, Wilde replied, “Jason has told me that he did not know, and I need to believe that in order to continue.”
Over the years, the “Booksmart” director has slammed longstanding rumors that she “left Jason for Harry” after a former nanny made the allegation in a tabloid. She doubled down and called the accusation “complete horses—.”
Wilde revealed she and Sudeikis had been having a “rough time” in their relationship for a while and recalled the moment she knew it was time to go their separate ways during a car ride in March 2020.
“We had a real bumpy, bumpy ride, and we were driving home from my birthday party my friends had had, and I said, ‘Did you give me a birthday present?’ And he said, ‘What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you.’ And he wasn’t wrong. We didn’t know each other anymore,” Wilde said.
Olivia Wilde seems to be responding to growing speculation surrounding the final days of her relationship with Jason Sudeikis. On Tuesday, the “Don’t Worry Darling” director shared an excerpt from Nora Ephron’s novel “Heartburn,” which featured the recipe for a salad dressing.
Wilde also opened up to Cooper about the public scrutiny she continues to face in her romantic relationships as the mom of two.
“Jason was photographed with his girlfriend on the beach in Costa Rica or something, and the press were like, ‘yay for him,’ like, he looks so happy. And then on my weeks, when I was somewhere, people would be like, ‘Well, my, my, my, she forgot her kids, she’s a mom,'” Wilde said.
