Olivia Wilde described her relationship with Harry Styles as “sweet,” “domestic” and unaffected by public judgment
Wilde addressed the backlash over their 10-year age gap and noted the double standard compared to Jason Sudeikis’ relationship
She reflected on the intense criticism she faced, saying her happiness seemed to anger people during that time
Olivia Wilde is well aware of the negative reactions the public had to her relationship with Harry Styles.
The 42-year-old actress and director discussed her nearly two-year romance with the 32-year-old British pop star and the criticism it received during the Wednesday, June 17 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper.
“People were f—ing pissed,” she recalled. “I think that it also had a lot to do with the kind of parasocial relationship people had with, have with him, which is a burden that is very weighty and not something I envy and he carries it with grace. I think that is an enormous responsibility that all those stars have to carry that’s f—ing impossible.”
When the former couple’s 10-year age difference was discussed, Wilde noted that she still doesn’t quite understand why the shift in dynamic seemed to get such a negative response.
“Oh, man. I don’t know. It really did upset people, though,” she said. “It was crazy. I don’t know how much I understand it yet. That’s one of the factors that I never really felt like, I fully, I don’t know.”

Behind-the-scenes, Wilde described her romance with the “As It Was” singer as the “loveliest relationship,” calling it “so sweet and so beautiful and really, actually, very domestic and kind and lovely.”
“I think that we existed in this, like, little bubble and the judgment never really got into that bubble, which was a miracle and testament to us making that happen,” she added.
Wilde said she felt like no matter what she did during that time, it upset onlookers.

“I think that people were mad,” she said. “It’s almost like the happiness made them mad. I would go to shows and dance, and people were like, ‘Oh, bitch. You slut.’ Oh, man. I don’t know. It really did upset people, though.”
At the time (late 2020), the news of Wilde’s split from longtime fiancé Jason Sudeikis had been announced, though she said it actually happened months prior around the time of her birthday in March.
Wilde pointed out that her ex Sudeikis, 50, had been dating Keeley Hazell, 39, with whom he had an 11-year age gap that wasn’t commented on publicly. She recalled spending Thanksgiving after their split with their kids, Otis, 12, and Daisy, 9, when Sudeikis spent time with Hazell abroad.
“Jason was photographed with his girlfriend on the beach in Costa Rica or something. And the press were like, ‘Yay for him! He looks so happy, so wonderful,’ ” Wilde said. “And I was like, if I was away from my children on a national holiday, frolicking on a beach, it’d be like, ‘Just burn her at the stake now. Take her out. Take the kids away from her forever and burn her to the ground.”
