The cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin has met with expected disappointment, not only from loyal Dexter fans but also from the creator, Clyde Phillips. To quote him, “It wasn’t handled well and I’m not happy about it.” (via Dissecting Dexter podcast)
It’s not just the Original Sin that has faced this unfortunate fate. Paramount has been cancelling titles in the Dexter franchise left and right for some time now, especially following its merger with Skydance. This may be due to oversaturation in the market; after all, it’s tough recreating the magic of beloved original series. Case in point: Suits reboot failed and was cancelled after one season.
The latest victim of cancellation in the Dexter franchise appears to be a spin-off based on the Trinity Killer, who is widely regarded as the best villain in the franchise. The series was reportedly set to bring back John Lithgow, who was to voice the younger version of the Trinity Killer. Alas – it’s now just a figment of imagination.
According to people in the know, the problem, apart from overpopulation of the titles, seems to be that Paramount is focusing on bringing back only renditions of Michael C. Hall. This is why every other title seems to be caught in limbo, whereas Resurrection’s wheels are set in motion. For now, Paramount is currently planning to open a writers’ room for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 finale aired on September 5, 2025, on Paramount+.
