Jake Owen is coming home later this year to share some new music.
The country music star who grew up in Vero Beach recently announced a new album and a new tour that ends with his annual hometown concert to benefit the Jake Owen Foundation, according to a Sept. 12 news release.
No official announcement has been made about the annual hometown concert, named The Flamingo Jam, because Owen and his foundation are finalizing the lineup of performers, according to Kat Atwood of Music City Media. No date has been set for when tickets go on sale.
The new album, “Dreams to Dream,” is scheduled to be released Nov. 7. It’s produced by Owen and Shooter Jennings, according to the release. The album’s first single released is “Long Time Lovin’ You.”
Owen is going on tour this fall in the United Kingdom with Darius Rucker, followed by a Florida run of concerts with Dirty Heads that culminates with the Jake Owen Foundation’s annual Flamingo weekend scheduled for Nov. 14-16.
Before last year’s hometown show, Owen talked exclusively to TCPalm about how his foundation has grown to become like a second job.
He started the Jake Owen Foundation in 2010 to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through Country Cares for St. Jude Kids, a fundraising program created by country music legend Randy Owen of Alabama. The elder Owen inspired the younger Owen, who aren’t related, about what he could do with his platform.
Still, Jake Owen said he wanted to go beyond the national level and help local children and families in Vero Beach and across Indian River County. Now, the foundation benefits about 30 different nonprofits that include the local chapters of Habitat for Humanity, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and Autism Speaks. The latter hits home for Owen because his nephew has autism.
“It was a big deal for me to be able to help my brother,” Owen said. “There’s lots of families in our community that have autistic children, but there’s not a lot of answers and help for that.”
To grow the amount of money raised every year, Owen needed to grow the event. It started as just a concert, but it since has added a comedy night, a fishing tournament, a songwriters’ session and a 3K run. It also previously had a golf tournament and a kickball competition.
His goal was to grow the event every year and make the community feel like it’s a part of making it happen. He wanted something for people who don’t play golf or can’t afford to go to the concert, which quickly sells out now.
“We wanted to just give the opportunity to everybody to feel like they could be part of the weekend one way or another,” Owen said. “Everybody knows by being involved, they’re really helping benefit the local community.”
He tries to make an appearance at every event throughout the weekend, but his favorite part is sitting on the side of the stage to watch others perform.
Owen is proud of the artists who weren’t paid but took time out of their schedules to help raise money for the foundation, including Florida Georgia Line, Little Big Town, Chris Young, Lady A, Darius Rucker, Jimmy Buffett and even Morgan Wallen before he became one of the biggest-selling country music artists of all time.
“My goal for the show is to always bring somebody in that’s an up-and-comer or someone that I think has been great for country music,” Owen said.
He’s excited this year to bring newcomer Zach Top to Vero Beach as part of The Flamingo Jam concert with Owen, who described himself as a “superfan.” He said Top is going to be the Renaissance man to bring the genre back to traditional country music.
“Vero gets to not only be involved in helping an incredible amount of people through charitable work and philanthropy, but also gets to witness the next big thing in country music,” Owen said. “It’s a great weekend.”
