Following three releases in the last three years, Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos says he’s finally ready to take a break from filmmaking. This comes ahead of the release of his latest feature, Bugonia, starring Emma Stone.
Yorgos Lanthimos says he’s taking a ‘little break’ after Emma Stone-led Bugonia
Yorgos Lanthimos recently opened up about the exhaustion that comes with creativity. When asked by Collider how he continues to make great films at such a rapid pace, the director admitted, “Well, I can’t keep doing that anymore. That’s what we’re certain of right now.” He added, “I think I need a break. I’ve said that before in between the other three, but I’m serious now. You can hold me to it. I’m going to take a little break.”
Lanthimos explained that his creative process often forces him to jump straight into the next project before fully recovering from the last one. “I decide which film to make every time a script is ready, so when it is ready, and we’ve been working on something for such a long time, it just feels like a shame to leave it there,” he said. “So I kind of forced myself to find the time to do it immediately after I finished something.”
That pattern led to him filming Kinds of Kindness during post-production on Poor Things and now, Bugonia, an adaptation of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 South Korean comedy Save the Green Planet!. The film follows two cousins (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who kidnap a CEO (Emma Stone), believing she’s part of an alien conspiracy to destroy Earth.
So, with Bugonia being his latest collaboration with Stone and another bold entry in his genre-defying filmography, Lanthimos is winding down for a bit. “At some point, it runs out,” he said of his creative stamina. “We’re at that point.”
Fans can catch Bugonia and perhaps the last Yorgos Lanthimos movie for a while in select theaters now, with a wider release on October 31.
