The Oxford City Council is exploring the creation of a downtown arts and entertainment district, following a proposal presented by Hunter Gentry, director of Historic Main Street Oxford.
The plan aims to balance entertainment with the city’s family-friendly values, ensuring a refined experience rather than a party atmosphere, according to a city spokesperson.
During a work session on Tuesday, several aspects of the proposal were discussed among city leaders, including possible consumption of alcoholic beverages outside licensed premises within the district’s boundaries, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
No aspects of this proposal are final. The city said it plans to gather input from downtown business owners, public safety departments and the public during this exploratory phase.
“This is a ‘work in progress’ and there is no certain timeframe to finalize it for council approval,” said Brian Graves, public information officer and community engagement coordinator for the city of Oxford.
