The San Diego Padres finally got a win over the Kansas City Royals as they pounded out 19 hits and 19 runs to salvage the final game of their crucial three-game series, 19-2.
The Padres sent German Marquez to the mound and crossed their fingers, and sure enough Marqez gave up a first inning home run to Jac Caglianone to put KC up 1-0. But the Padres came out after that and began hitting like a team that desperately needed a win. They put four runs up, starting with a pair of small-ball hits by Luis Rengifo and Jace Bowen, then a walk to Luis Campusano.

Fernando Tatis Jr. then drove in two with a single, and Jackson Merrill plated another run with a hit. A sacrfiice fly from Manny Machado made it 4-1 as the Padres provided Marquez with a solid cushion.
That cushion grew in the third as San Diego put up two more runs. Xander Bogaerts and Bowen doubled, with Bowen’s hit scoring Bogaerts, and Campusano singled to score Bowen and make it 6-1.
After that the route was on. Jackson Merrill started the home run action with a solo shot in the fourth, and Fernando Tatis Jr. followed with another one in the sixth.
That made it 8-2, and the Pads poured it on in the eighth and ninth with five runs and six runs, respectively. Everybody hit in those rallies, but Ty France led the parade with a pair of homers, and by the end of the game second baseman Tyler Tolbert was on the mound pitching de facto batting practice.

Pitching-wise, the Padres survived this game with a mix-and-match pitching performance. Marquez went just three innings and gave up two runs, and after that Yukie Matsui, Randy Vasquez and Wandy Peralta combined to pitch six scoreless innings to allow the offense to turn this one into a much-needed laugher.
It won’t solve the Padres’ problems, however. San Diego did climb back to within a game of .500 at 49-50, and the Padres are somehow still within three games of a wild-card berth, although they would have to climb over a small herd of teams to get there with the trade deadline fast approaching.
They’ll start the effort with a tough four-game series against the Atlanta Braves starting tomorrow night, and they’ll send JP Sears to the mound against Bryce Elder for the Braves in the series opener.
