The Danish Royal Household has announced Princess Isabella, 18, will begin her military service starting in August as the country amps up its military numbers. In a new development and effective July 2025, conscription via lottery was extended to women in Denmark for the first time when they turned 18.
The Danish Palace wrote [Translated]: “Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella will serve her military service at the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse after completing her high school diploma. The Princess will be among the first to serve 11 months of military service.”
“His Royal Highness the Crown Prince also served his military duty at the Gardehusarkasernen in Slagelse”, referring to her older brother Crown Prince Christian, 20.

The future king has already completed key stages of his training, with the royal household previously sharing glimpses of him in uniform during exercises and barracks lif.
Princess Isabella will soon celebrate her 19th birthday on April 21 and will be in one of the first waves of the expanded conscription program.
The new system is expected to boost the number of personnel to 6,500 people undertaking military service annually by 2033, according to the Associated Press.
The milestone of Isabella joining marks a significant cultural shift for Denmark, where compulsory military service has historically applied only to men.
It remains unclear whether the royal volunteered or was selected via the lottery system.
