Paul Bettany reflected on Heath Ledger’s legacy, calling him an incredibly creative force and full of life
Bettany sat down with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast
He dismissed the “tortured genius” narrative around Ledger, describing him instead as vibrant and shining with energy
Paul Bettany still often thinks about his late A Knight’s Tale costar and friend, Heath Ledger.
Joining Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bettany, 55, reflected on Ledger’s legacy, nearly two decades after the actor died at the age of 28 from an accidental overdose.
“Whenever I think about him, I find myself sort of overwhelmed with sadness when I have to remember that he’s dead,” the WandaVision actor shared. “He was an incredibly creative force and I find myself mourning the things that he didn’t make, not just as an actor, he was just an incredibly creative human being.”
The two starred together in the 2001 Brian Helgeland-directed adventure film, which also starred Shannyn Sossamon, Rufus Sewell and Alan Tudyk.

While people often look back at Ledger through a serious lens, Bettany fondly remembers his positive energy.
“I’ve said this before, I think these sort of narratives and almost an industry gets built around the narrative of him,” Bettany said.
When host Horowitz mentioned that people refer to Ledger as a “tortured genius kind of thing,” Bettany emphasized that the late actor “just wasn’t like that.”
“He was just shining and when you were with him, it was like having the sun on you,” he remembered. “He was just so full of life and joy, and the kid couldn’t sleep, and that’s it. That’s the story. A fantastic actor.”
On Jan. 22, 2008, Ledger was pronounced dead after an accidental overdose from combining sleeping pills with other prescription medications.

In a talk during L.A. Comic Con in 2025, Bettany shared that he hadn’t seen A Knight’s Tale since it was released over 20 years ago, and likely wouldn’t again, saying that it “was a really long time ago.”
“It was like another lifetime ago,” he shared. “And people do come up sometimes, people come up to me on the street and quote things at me, and I literally can’t remember. I can’t remember any of it.”
“I saw [the film] when it first came out. I’ve never seen it again since. There are lots of reasons for that, and just one of them is that I miss Heath too much,” he added.
