Sometimes a movie casting doesn’t match up with how you envisioned the character in your head…but then the actor’s performance ends up completely blowing you away. Recently, Reddit user u/gypsytx asked, “Who are some actors who were miscast but still gave a great performance?” Here are some of the actors people thought weren’t right for the role, but ended up totally killing it:

1. “Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant in Who framed Roger Rabbit. On paper it looked terrible, but he is perfect for that role.”

2. “Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the X-Men films. He was the third choice and a last minute replacement for Dougray Scott, but he made us believe a 6’2″ Australian musical theater actor was a 5’3″ Canadian mutant.”

3. “I’m not sure if this is a hot take or not, but I thought Jennifer Lawrence was terribly miscast as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. She was too mature-looking, too pretty, and nothing like the scrawny, scrappy little teen Katniss is described as. That said, she’s a great actress and gave an awesome performance.”

5. “The screenwriter for My Cousin Vinny originally envisioned Vinny as a six-foot-something ex-boxer. He was skeptical about casting Joe Pesci at first, but a couple of months later, Goodfellas came out and he was sold.”

8. “Barbra Streisand was greatly miscast in the role of Dolly in Hello, Dolly!. The character is supposed to be an older, extravagant matchmaker. But Barbara is so talented throughout the movie that you still love her performance.”

9. “Alan Rickman as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies. He was too old for the role and never truly felt menacing, but damn, he was good.”

10. “Emma Watson as Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. In the books, Hermione is chubby and has buck teeth. As a girl who was also chubby with buck teeth (and a bit of a know-it-all like Hermione as well), I felt seen when I read the books. When I found out they’d cast a thin girl with normal-looking teeth, I was so disappointed! But the minute Emma Watson was on screen, I had to admit, she totally nailed Hermione’s personality.”

11. “Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire is the first one that comes to mind. On paper it sounded wrong, but he really won people over.”

12. “Daniel Craig as James Bond. He’s not ‘traditionally handsome,’ he’s too short, and he has the wrong build and hair color. There was a good reason there was some outcry when he was announced, but his performance in Casino Royale was excellent. He carries himself like Bond despite the above.”

13. “Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Rami came in, totally rocked it, and won an Oscar. He played a more despondent version of what I imagined Freddie to be, but dues where dues are due. He gave a great performance.”
