Perez joins Brett as only Royals in 300 home run club

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) — The 300 home runs by a catcher club just got a little larger.

Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez became the eighth player in Major League Baseball history to reach 300 home runs while being primarily a catcher. Perez’s 300th career home run, his 27th of the 2025 season, came on an 0-2 splitter in the top of the third inning of Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Perez, 35, joined Mike Piazza (399), Carlton Fisk (366), Johnny Bench (356), Yogi Berra (336), Lance Parrish (324), Ivan Rodriguez (311) and Gary Carter (307) among catchers who have reached the 300-home run plateau.

In Royals’ franchise history, Perez becomes the second member of the 300 home run club. Only Royals Hall of Famer George Brett has hit more in franchise history with 317 career home runs to Brett’s name.

His second HR of the night also gave him 1000 career RBI.

The Valencia, Venezuela, native began his career in 2011 with 3 home runs in 39 games. In fact, Perez failed to hit 20 home runs in any of his first four seasons in Major League Baseball.

Perez, a nine-time American League All-Star, has hit 20 or more home runs in every non-COVID season since 2015.

Until this summer, Perez’s 48 home run campaign in 2021 was the best single-season mark by a catcher in MLB history. That record has since been broken by Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.

Perez’s 27 home runs this season tie his second-best single-season mark of his career, tying the 27 he hit in 2017, 2018 and 2024.
