Pete Davidson returned to Saturday Night Live for an unscheduled bit on Weekend Update, poking fun at his investment in a Staten Island Ferry and defending New York‘s new mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Co-anchor Colin Jost, who bought the ferry with Davidson in 2022, introduced him after The New York Times labeled their venture a “money-losing fiasco.”
Davidson opened with a shrug. “What’s up,” he said. “Yeah, if you’re wondering why I did a show in Saudi Arabia, it’s because we’re hemorrhaging cash on this ferry.”
He said he hadn’t read the Times article himself. “I can’t spend five bucks on a paywall. I’ve got a kid on the way.”
Jost congratulated him on the news. “Thanks,” Davidson replied. “I’m pumped to be a dad. I plan to put in way more effort than I ever did here.”
Turning to the camera, he spoke to Staten Islanders upset about the outcome. “If you swore you’d leave New York if Mamdani won, but you’ve got too many warrants in Jersey and not enough guns for Florida, welcome to New Staten Island.”
He paused. “It’ll have everything that makes Staten Island great. The pizza.”
Jost asked, “That’s the whole list?”
“Yep,” Davidson replied. “We had to drop the ‘Titanic’ name, though. Too many passengers on this boat actually like crashing into ice.”
Wrapping up, Davidson said, “I still got it. This is gonna be a big year.”
Jost nodded. “The ferry’s fine,” Davidson added. “The media just makes things look worse than they are.”
