Celebrating two decades of art and entertainment, Pickerington Community Theatre has kicked off it’s platinum anniversary season with the uproarious musical “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.”
Based on the 1988 film starring Michael Caine, Steve Martin and Glenne Headly, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” follows a pair of competing conmen as they cavort through the socialites of the Côte d’Azur’s upper crust.
“One of the really nice things about this is that you don’t have to have seen the 1988 movie to get what’s going on,” explained the show’s director, Adam Schroeder. “It builds a lot on the movie [but] we’ve also taken things, maybe twisted it a little, and taken it that extra mile to work in a couple of extra laughs. We’ve added some background gags that I think people will really enjoy.”
Schroeder reckoned audiences would always find something new, no matter how many times they came to see the show.
Over the past two decades of Pickerington Community Theatre, the all-volunteer organization has welcomed hundreds of actors and stagecraft creatives from all over central Ohio to take part in their productions.
“Pickerington Community Theatre has always been very fortunate to draw a really wide variety of actors; that’s no different with this show,” said Schroeder, who also serves as the organization’s vice president. “One of the things that I think our audiences will really enjoy is the mixture of familiar faces and new faces.”
Schroeder went on to point out that holds true for this musical’s three leads. Dr. Dan Heaton and Ashley James (who portray the characters of “Lawrence Jameson” and “Christine Colgate” respectively) have both taken on a variety of roles for PCT over the years while newcomer Tyler Woodward makes his Pickerington Community Theatre debut with hist take on “Freddy Benson.”
Schroeder pointed out that, much like the original film, the musical version of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” does contain some adult language and risqué jokes.
“This is a PG-13 script, for sure,” he cautioned.
Pickerington Community Theatre’s production of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” will take to the Theater at Violet Woods’ stage at 8 p.m. on both March 13 and 14 and it will finish its run with a 2 p.m. matinee on March 15.
