This is the first time the father-of-two, who also celebrates his 66th birthday today, has been arrested since his association with billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to light. Despite numerous allegations, Andrew has consistently and vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
Piers delivered a harsh two-word verdict on Twitter, informing his followers, “BREAKING NEWS: Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor arrested on the Sandringham royal estate by police investigating misconduct in public office. Stunning news.”
If convicted, the maximum penalty for misconduct in public office is life imprisonment.
Thames Valley Police, who did not identify Andrew in accordance with UK law, issued a statement on Thursday, “As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk”, reports Daily Express.
“The man remains in police custody at this time. We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance. Please also remember that this case is now active so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court.”
Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said, “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.”
“It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence. We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”
This marks another instance of Piers speaking out against Andrew, as the broadcaster previously condemned the royal’s disastrous 2019 BBC interview and contended that the former prince was dishonest about his connection with Epstein and demonstrated inadequate compassion for victims.
The journalist also raised questions about Andrew’s out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre, estimated at £12 million ($16 million). The former GMB host scrutinized how this was financed and maintained that the settlement did not eliminate Andrew’s obligation to reveal the truth.
Following the release of the Epstein emails by the Department of Justice, Piers declared: “There are many unanswered questions, but one fact we know is that Prince Andrew lied to Emily Maitlis.”
He further noted that Andrew won’t “ever be able to clear his name” unless he testifies under oath, but added, “I’m not holding my breath.”
