Mumbai witnessed an unforgettable celebration of poetry and music last week as Kavyaraag Mehfil concluded to a packed house, reaffirming the growing appeal of poetry-based live performances in contemporary India. The evening brought together literature, music and storytelling in a deeply immersive experience, leaving audiences spellbound. Founded by singer-composer-producer duo Chinmayi Tripathi and Joell Mukherjii, Kavyaraag is a unique musical initiative dedicated to bringing Hindustani poetry to contemporary audiences through original compositions and evocative live performances. Blending the richness of literature with the emotional depth of music, the duo has created a distinctive platform where timeless poetry finds a new voice. Drawing from the works of legendary poets and saints including Kabir, Meera, Mahadevi Verma, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Bashir Badr, Vinod Kumar Shukla, Bhawani Prasad Mishra, Naresh Saxena and Gopaldas Neeraj, among others, Kavyaraag transforms verses into songs that resonate with both young listeners and lovers of literature. Two new albums mark a milestone for Kavyaraag One of the highlights of the evening was the launch of two new Kavyaraag albums in the presence of eminent guests. ‘Woh Kamra Yaad Aata Hai’ features the poetry of Javed Akhtar, newly composed and performed by Chinmayi Tripathi and Joell Mukherjii. The second album, ‘Kavyaraag Satsang’, is a musical offering based on the timeless poetry of Sant Kabir, reimagined through Kavyaraag’s signature sound. Speaking about the journey behind Kavyaraag, the founders said that their endeavour has always been to make poetry accessible and alive for today’s audiences. “Poetry has always belonged to people, it was meant to be heard, sung and shared. Through Kavyaraag, we hope to revive that living tradition and help timeless words find new listeners. Seeing a packed theatre singing along, listening with complete silence, and celebrating poetry together is deeply moving and gives us hope that literature still has the power to unite hearts,” said Chinmayi Tripathi and Joell Mukherjii. ‘Mumbai came together for something beyond Bollywood’ For Chinmayi, the overwhelming response in Mumbai was particularly special, given the city’s deep association with mainstream music. “Mumbai thrives on Bollywood and Bollywood music, and then the weather is so unpredictable… but still it was a house full show. Some people came from other cities as well just to attend this programme — from Goa, Surat… So this was really moving for us and really overwhelming,” she shared. Joell added that the audience’s response has strengthened their belief in creating original, unconventional musical experiences. “When you give something new to people, something you believe in, even though it is not mainstream, it is something different, people not only accept it, they love it and really support it. This is what we have experienced and now it has become a firm belief. Whatever doubts we had about our journey so far have been completely broken down after this programme, seeing the response,” he said. The magic and madness behind live performances For Chinmayi, the true essence of music lies in the shared experience of a live performance. “Live performances are something artists live for. The sleepless nights, the nervous energy, the madness, unpredictability before a big concert… it’s so frustrating at times, so chaotic! So much of time, effort and preparation goes into putting a concert together. But when it really comes together and everything falls in place, the adrenaline rush, the beauty and the joy you experience because of the collective energy of all the people is priceless. The collective joys, pain and emotional rush we experience through the music changes something in all of us, and we believe that in a subtle way everyone carries the change along with them,” she said.
Kavyaraag to take poetry across India and beyond With the success of the Mumbai edition, the duo is now looking at expanding the reach of Kavyaraag. Joell revealed, “We plan to do a multi-city all India tour, and then also travel to USA and UK early next year.” With every performance, Kavyaraag continues to build a cultural movement that bridges India’s rich literary heritage with contemporary musical expression.
