Their Majesties arrived at Joint Base Andrews, near Washington DC, at around 7.35pm UK time on Monday. They were then driven to the White House, where they were welcomed by the US President, Donald Trump and his wife, Melania.
But what do you think? Should the King have met with Mr Trump, or was it a mistake? Vote in our poll and comment in the comment section below.
The King’s visit comes during a turbulent time for the US President, due to his war against Iran.
The incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner saw the US President, who had been the previous target of an assassination attempt, swiftly evacuated by Secret Service agents along with other senior members of the administration.
Saturday’s suspect, said to have been carrying a shotgun and handgun, has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.
He is understood to have been a guest in the Washington Hilton hotel where the event was being held and faces charges including assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, but acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said additional charges will be filed.
Mr Trump has branded the UK’s approach to the Iran war “terrible” and repeatedly lashed out at Sir Keir Starmer – at one point describing him as “not Winston Churchill”.
And reports have suggested the US could review its position on the Falkland Islands in retaliation for Sir Keir’s lack of support for the war in Iran.
The monarchy’s soft power diplomacy is its strongest weapon in support of the UK’s overseas interests and there will be hope in Downing Street that Charles and Camilla can help put the UK-US special relationship on a firmer footing.
