Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter will star in and produce an untitled movie musical based on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” for Universal Pictures, her first major studio film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Carpenter’s specific role in the film remains undisclosed, but sources describe the project as “a passion project” for the global pop star, the report said.
Lorene Scafaria will write and direct the feature. Scafaria is best known for writing and directing “Hustlers,” the Jennifer Lopez-starring crime drama, the report said.
Carroll’s Victorian-era story follows a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and lands in a fantastical world of talking animals. The tale has been adapted multiple times, including as a Disney animated movie in 1951 and a Tim Burton-directed film in 2010 that starred Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
According to the outlet, while this marks Carpenter’s first major studio film, the “Espresso” singer has previous acting experience. Her credits include the films “The Hate U Give” and “Emergency,” as well as the TV series “Girl Meets World.” She also recently signed on to guest star in a “Muppet Show” special for Disney+.
Carpenter’s film project comes as she just earned six Grammy Award nominations. These include album of the year and best pop vocal album for “Man’s Best Friend,” and song of the year, record of the year, best pop solo performance and best music video for “Manchild.”
