Lady Gaga revealed in a new interview that she was taking lithium while filming the 2018 hit movie “A Star Is Born.”
In a Rolling Stone profile published on Thursday, Nov. 13, the “Just Dance” crooner told the outlet that she was taking the mood stabilizer during filming and felt she might not recover. While lithium is commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder, Gaga did not publicly disclose a specific diagnosis.
After filming wrapped, the effects of lithium started to catch up with her as she embarked on her “Joanne” world tour. Gaga — whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta — then suffered a psychotic break, which led her to cancel her ‘Joanne’ world tour six months in.
“There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore,’ and I canceled the tour,” Gaga told the outlet. “There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything. … I completely crashed. It was really scary.”
At the time, Gaga recounted to Rolling Stone that she didn’t think she “could get better.” Gaga added, “ I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.”
Unfortunately, the singer’s struggles persisted into the creation of her 2020 album “Chromatica.” When she met her now-fiancé, Michael Polansky, in December 2019, Gaga was still abusing substances. “I was as great as I could be for someone that smoked weed all day, knocked back a couple bottles of wine and passed out,” she said, adding that she was also smoking three packs of cigarettes a day.
Polansky, a 42-year-old tech entrepreneur, observed her state during that period. “The piece that I always noticed was how disempowered she felt — not in charge of her own life,” he told the outlet. “I’d never met somebody so incredibly talented and gifted feel so disempowered.”
Gaga credits Polansky with helping her through that difficult time. “He wanted to take care of me, and I’ve never been loved that way,” she said. “He helped me see that my life was precious.”
“A Star Is Born,” which Gaga filmed alongside Bradley Cooper, follows the tragic love story of Jackson Maine, a seasoned musician, who discovers and falls in love with a struggling singer, Ally. But as Ally’s career takes off, Jackson’s life deteriorates due to his battle with alcoholism and addiction, creating a tragic contrast between her fame and his decline.
The film was nominated for 24 awards in 2019, winning the Academy Award for best original song for “Shallow,” the BAFTA Award for best original music, and the Golden Globe for best original song in a motion picture for “Shallow.”
