Preparations for Saturday’s Fiji Tribute Concert

The “A Hui Hou – Fiji Tribute Concert” on Saturday, Sept. 13, set to honor the life and music of the late reggae singer George Veikoso, known to fans around the world as Fiji, is anticipated to draw over 30,000 attendees to the grounds of the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell and Kapiolani Park.

The all-star lineup features J Boog, Common Kings, Maoli, The Green, Sammy Johnson, Kapena, Ekolu, Josh Tatofi, Manaʻo Company, Three Plus, Rebel Souljahz, Siaosi, Irie Love, Spawnbreezie, Hot Rain, Na Drua, Peni Dean, BET, Damon, Loeka, Jeff Rasmussen, H Dawg, Bet, Westafa, Sean Naʻauao, Na Wai, Hawaiian Style Band, Ilona Irvine, Finn, Iam Tongi and others with hosts Davey D, Lina Girl, Big Koa, BigBodyCisco and Mikey Monis.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. with performances beginning at 5 p.m. No reentry will be allowed once inside. The designated viewing area within Kapiolani Park will open at noon for those with tickets offering additional viewing screens and a live broadcast. Reentry will be allowed in this area. Personal shade structures and chairs are allowed; alcohol is not. Performances will end at 9:50 p.m.

The park itself will be open to the public from 5 a.m. to midnight and closed from midnight to 5 a.m.

The concert will also be livestreamed on YouTube at the official @FijiTheArtist channel beginning 5 p.m. Sept. 13. Fans are encouraged to view the event from home to reduce traffic in the area.

Preparations have already begun by event sponsors Kinaole Foundation and agencies from the City and County of Honolulu. The Honolulu Police Department, Honolulu Fire Department, emergency personnel and various public safety personnel will be on site throughout the event to maintain a safe environment. The public is asked to be respectful to all attendees, act with aloha, be vigilant and report any illegal or suspicious activity.

“Our top priority is ensuring everyone can enjoy the concert safely,” stated HPD Major Events Division Major Cliff Ramson in a release. “We’ve been coordinating with the city, first responders and event organizers for weeks in preparation for this large gathering. We ask the public to kōkua by following instructions and looking out for one another.”

The following are prohibited within Kapiolani Park:

  • Weapons of any kind
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Alcohol consumption within the park
  • Overnight camping
  • Tents except for canopies and small shade structures
  • Recreational drones
  • Unauthorized commercial activity
  • No open flames except for grilling
  • Animals except for service animals
  • Littering

Extra trash receptacles, portable toilets and bathroom servicing will be provided though attendees are encouraged to pack out what you pack in.

Parking and Transportation

Heavy traffic is anticipated throughout the day. Park parking will be limited with some stalls reserved for permit holders. Public parking restrictions will be in place from 11 p.m. Sept. 12 through 11 p.m. Sept. 13 in the following areas:

  • Both sides of Kapahulu Avenue from Paki Avenue to Kalakaua Avenue
  • Both sides of Monsarrat Avenue from Kalakaua Avenue to Paki Avenue
  • Both sides of Leahi Avenue from Noela Street to Kapahulu Avenue
  • Ewa-side of Kapahulu Avenue from Ala Wai Boulevard to Kanaina Street

Paki Avenue (eastbound) from Kapahulu Avenue to Kalakaua Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue to Monsarrat Avenue will be closed to public access starting at 5 p.m. and reserved for first responders. Illegal parking will be subject to towing. No overnight parking is allowed at Waikiki Shell.

Off-site parking will be available at Waikiki Elementary School. According to HPD, 15 to 20 shuttles will operate between the Neal S. Blaisdell Center and Waikiki Shell from 2 to 6 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m. with pick-up/drop-off in front of the Shell on Monsarrat Avenue. Blaisdell parking fee is $8.

Organizers are also asking the public to utilize other modes of transportation such as carpooling, walking, biking or riding TheBus. Regular fares and passes apply.

HPD reminds all attendees to follow the rules and regulations to ensure a safe experience for everyone:

  • Park rules will be strictly enforced, including the prohibition of alcohol and the use of drones; parking lots are closed nightly from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • E-bikes must comply with all traffic rules
  • Always be patient, follow directions by police officers managing traffic control and look out for one another, especially keiki and kūpuna
  • Never drink and drive
  • Slow down, buckle up and drive without distractions
