Primus pulled in an eclectic list of surprise guests for its show last night (Aug. 6) at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, welcoming Tool drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor, opening act Ty Segall, South Park co-creator Matt Stone, comedian Bill Burr and bass virtuoso MonoNeon onstage at various points.
Chancellor and Burr (on drums) drove the rhythm section on “Too Many Puppies,” while Stone manned the drum kit for a cover of King Crimson’s “Thela Hun Ginjeet,” which Primus had only performed a handful of times since 1994. See fan-shot footage below.

Segall joined in the fun for a cover of Black Sabbath’s “N.I.B.” that he and Primus had debuted late last month in New Orleans, and Carey assumed the drum throne for the main-set closing “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver.” The show closed with fellow opener MonoNeon lending a hand on “Southbound Pachyderm,” from Primus’ 1995 album Tales From the Punchbowl.
Primus’ Onward & Upward tour, which features new drummer John Hoffman, concludes tonight and tomorrow in Sacramento, Ca. The group released its first song with him, the Maynard James Keenan-featuring “Little Lord Fentanyl,” in May.
