Eton describes its purpose as to “draw out the best of young people’s talents and to enable them to flourish and make a positive impact on others through the course of a healthy, happy and fulfilling life”. Its motto is Floreat Etona – “May Eton flourish”.
It is known for educating generations of the British establishment, including 20 prime ministers.
Security at the school, at which boys sleep in different houses situated around the small town and frequently walk its streets, is already tight.
Unusually, it offers private bedrooms for all boys. Princes William and Harry were both in Manor House, one of the 25 different boarding houses which make up the college, and had their private protection officers living in neighbouring quarters.
Referring to its “unique place in the popular consciousness”, the Good Schools Guide calls it the school “that almost single-handedly bears the brunt of society’s discomfort with private education”.
The guide describes it as: “A school so good that many people choose it despite its name, not because of it.
