Prince Harry and Meghan Markle came under fire from Sky News Australia host Paul Murray as he slammed their new deal with Netflix.
This comes after the streaming platform’s choice to renew its collaboration with the pair through a multi-year, first-look contract, encompassing all TV and movie ventures from Archewell Productions.
However, sources indicate that Harry and Meghan will only receive payment from this deal if Netflix decides to approve their pitches, representing a major shift from their $100 million contract in 2020.
First-look deals generally allow a corporation to evaluate a project before deciding whether to move forward with it.
If they pass, the creator is then able to shop it around to other outlets.
A spokesperson for Meghan and Harry informed the Daily Mail that the duo did get paid for the agreement, although they refused to disclose additional details, saying, “I can say no more owing to commercially confidential contractual agreements.”
In response to the agreement, the Sky News presenter sought the opinion of US television commentator Megyn Kelly, asking, “Speaking of negotiations, what do you think the balance was between Harry and Meghan and Netflix?”
Murray continued, “Because they have re-done a deal but it’s a really ‘p— weak version’ of the first deal, they don’t get the automatic money and then you have to make something, you basically have to make something and then will decide whether they going to show it or not to get the money, how do you make of that negotiation went?”
Megyn delivered a scathing response as she stated,”To me it sounds like they Netflix while to cancel and someone representing Meghan and Harry begged them to at least say that it’s a first look, in a way to say we don’t think you’re losers, you’re not cut off, we think you’re winners, such winners that we want to get the first look to see what you’re doing later down the line because they might want to buy it.
“But really, it’s just a save face mechanism, Netflix has these two under contract, if it wanted to have an exclusive deal with them, it would have, it has more money than God, it’s not hurting for cash.”
Meghan released a statement about the deal saying, “We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand.
” My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally and celebrates our shared vision.”
But one show that’s guaranteed to hit the screens is the second season of With Love, Meghan, where Meghan will be seen cooking up a storm in the kitchen alongside celebrities and lifestyle gurus.
