Prince Harry has issued a warning about sharing photos of your children online after Meghan Markle’s recent slip-up in a social media post.
During an appearance on the Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know podcast, the Duke of Sussex was asked to share his thoughts on a child’s digital rights, and whether it is okay for parents to post photos of their kids on the internet.
The podcast host said that while he regularly sees parents capturing important moments in their children’s day, it is “surreal” to think that by sharing them online you can have videos and photos of someone else’s child, and they can have clips or images of your own kid.
Hasan added that because of generative AI, the speed and rate at which online content can be manipulated is “a really terrifying thing.”
After being asked whether parents should post images of their children online, Harry, 41, replied, “Parents can do whatever they want.
“The reality is, from what I’ve learned, what I’ve seen, what I’ve heard, and experienced especially through the Parents’ Network, is you should be really, really worried, concerned and cautious about putting photographs of your kids online, especially now with this surge on unregulated AI.”
Harry, who shares six-year-old son Prince Archie and four-year-old daughter Princess Lilibet with his wife Meghan, 44, warned, “You just don’t know where it’s gonna go, you don’t know how it’s gonna be used.
“But that’s also really sad, and I know there’s parents watching this going, ‘Well, how am I supposed to share photographs of my kids with so and so on the other side of the world?”
When discussing how social media affects children and young adults, Hasan asked Harry, “I don’t know if you guys have hit this crossroads yet, but what are you gonna do when your kids ask for a cellphone?
“Are you gonna give them a phone? I mean, have you talked to Meghan about this? Because I’ve talked to my wife about this.”
“Yeah, we talk about it a lot,” Harry responded, “And I think, because of what we know now, we will be way more cautious and hesitant about allowing our kids to have access to social media. But the problem is, so many parents don’t have that awareness.”
He continued, “In no logical, fair, ethical, moral world should a parent have to consider that this app, that sits on the phone–which by the way, having a phone for your kid is a really important thing.”
Hasan agreed, with both of them sharing that being able to contact and keep track of their children via mobile phone is a great perk of parenting.
Harry’s comments came days after Meghan showed Archie and Lilibet’s faces in a recent Halloween-themed video she posted on social media.
The Duchess of Sussex enjoyed a family outing at a pumpkin patch on Sunday and shared a clip on Instagram to show some of the highlights of her day with her children and husband, Harry.
In the footage, which she captioned “Happy Sunday,” the children can be seen running around Lane Farms in Santa Barbara and later carving their Halloween decorations at home with their dad.
Unlike other social media posts where Meghan has blurred the kids’ faces, in her latest post fans got a sneak peek as they were visible briefly while playing at home as Harry worked on his pumpkin.
Even though they appear blurry, it is the first time Lilibet’s face has been shared publicly since 2022, when Harry and Meghan released a portrait photo of their daughter to mark her first birthday.
Meanwhile, Archie’s face has not been shared publicly since the Sussexes released their official Christmas card in 2021.
