Prince Harry has reportedly sent a private message to the Royal Family following the passing of Katharine, the Duchess of Kent.
The beloved Royal died peacefully at her Kensington Palace home on Thursday (Sept. 4) evening at the age of 92. Harry, who has resided in Califonia since 2021, is said to have reached out to his UK relatives upon hearing of the royal’s death. The content of the private message is not known. PEOPLE also reported that the Duke of Susessex condolences to the Duchess of Kent’s family following her death.
One of The Duchess of Kent’s few public appearance in the recent was attending Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018. The Buckingham annouced her death in a statement on Friday, September 5.
“It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent,” the statement began. “Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.”
“The King and Queen and all Members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss and remembering fondly The Duchess’s life-long devotion to all the organizations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people,” it continued.
After news broke on Friday, Prince William and Kate Middleton released a statement on social media. The Prince and Princess of Wales wrote, “Our thoughts today are with The Duke of Kent and his family, particularly George, Helen and Nicholas.The Duchess worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music. She will be a much missed member of the family.”
The Duchess of Kent, born Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, became a member of the British Royal Family when she married the late Queen Elizabeth’s cousin Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent in 1961. The two have three children: George, Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Taylor, and Lord Nicholas Windsor.
In 1996, The Duchess of Kent withdraw from her royal duties and took a position as a music teacher at Wansbeck Primary School and was known as “Mrs Kent.” She also focused on charity work following stepping down but occassionally made appearances at royal events.
The news of death comes just days Harry is slated to be in the UK to attend the WellChild Awards on Monday, Sept. 8. There was speculation that this upcoming trip will also involve a visit to his father, King Charles. Harry’s attendance at the annual event on Monday, will also be the the 3-year anniversart of Queen Elizabeth’s death.
The Duchess of Kent’s funeral is reportedly scheduled to happen next week, with Harry’s attendance unknown.
Meghan is reportedly going to remain in California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, while Harry is in the UK.
