Prince Harry admitted he worried about putting Queen Elizabeth in an “awkard position” by asking her for a huge favor, according to a royal expert.
The Duke of Sussex had a very close relationship with his grandmother and seems to have inherited her sharp sense of humor. Indeed, the pair teamed up to create a funny video to promote the Invictus Games, with the clip going viral.
The second Invictus Games was held in Orlando, Florida, in May 2016 and Harry enlisted the help of the late monarch to promote the sporting event – but not before first stressing out about asking her to take part.
Royal author Valentine Low described the time in his book Courtiers, recalling how Harry received a cheeky video from then-president Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama.
In the playful clip, the couple stood with crossed arms, while three service personnel stood behind them. “Hey, Prince Harry,” Michelle said.
She continued, “Remember you told us to ‘Bring it’ at the Invictus Games?” Barack pointed at the camera and warned, “Careful what you wish for!”
Harry watched the video alongside the Invictus Games Foundation’s trustee Nick Loughran. Valentine said the pair thought Barack and Michelle’s video was “brilliant” and immediately set about coming up with their own response.
“I’m going to have to get the Queen involved aren’t I?” Harry asked, according to the royal author.
Harry, Nick, Kensington Palace communications secretary Jason Knauf and Harry’s private secretary Edward Lane Fox then spent the night coming up with ideas for their own video.
When they decided to ask the Queen for her help, Harry is said to have been “nervous” to ask her.
“I don’t want to put her in an awkward position,” the Duke of Sussex said, according to Valentine. It’s believed Harry was worried he would “belittle” the monarch’s work with the clip.
To ease his anxiety, the Duke of Sussex sought out the late Queen’s private secretary, Sir Christopher Geidt, for some advice.
Christopher is believed to have simply told Harry to ask the Queen herself.
Elizabeth was “more than willing to help” and just two days later, Harry met with a film crew at Windsor Castle. The 40-second video was shot in just two takes and showed Harry and the Queen sitting together while looking at pictures of the Invictus competitors from the previous event.
They were interrupted by a call from “Michelle” (which was actually Nick’s number that had been changed in the phone).
The late Queen smiled as she replied, “Oh really… please!” Harry seemed pleased and said, “Boom,” before pretending to drop a mic.
