When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to the US in 2020, King Charles didn’t just lose his son and daughter-in-law, he lost his grandchildren, and he’d like them back before their American accents are permanent, says one royal expert.
Ian Pelham Turner worked at the Palace as a royal photographer and crossed paths with the then-Prince Charles, who was still married to Princess Diana, and Pelham Turner got to know the royals behind closed doors.
And while there was strict protocol — no small talk — he did have a first-hand experience with Charles as a young father, who is now a grandfather to five children, but two are on the other side of the Atlantic.
We got on Zoom with Pelham Turner, who shared some anecdotes with us, like the time he got a photo of Diana chatting with clowns on stilts. But, when it came to Charles, he appeared to have a jealous streak, competing with Diana over William, said the former royal photographer.
As seen with many families, when someone become a grandparent, they may change their tune a little bit, and be a lot easier on their children’s children, much to the chagrin of their offspring, but in this case, Charles doesn’t see two of his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who live in Montecito, California, and Pelham Turner believes the King would like them home with him.
There’s been talk of a royal reconciliation with Harry’s reps and Charles’ rep meeting for lunch over the summer, and now that Harry is going to be in the UK in September, it may be possible, says numerous reports.
Pelham Turner shared his thoughts on the matter, which he is basing on his contacts as a TV presenter in the UK, covering the royals.
He said: “But, what I do believe, from what we’re hearing behind the scenes, right now, is that, I feel personally, is that Charles wants to see Harry and Meghan back, and the children, because he’s very sentimental.”
He added: “You know, he’s very much a family person, and it must be annoying for him, because they’re all growing up — and there’s nothing wrong with American accents, don’t get me wrong — they’re all growing up with American accents now, and, I think, it’s part of his family, he’s a grandfather to these children, as well.”

And while Charles may want the Sussexes in the UK with him, it would be a culture shock for the children, says reputation expert Eric Schiffer.
We asked Mr. Schiffer how Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet fit into all of this, Harry trying to reconcile with his family in the UK, and according to Schiffer, there are a lot of moving parts, referring to Archie and Lili as “two tiny pawns in a high stakes chess match.”
He said: “A UK return turns the kids into spectacle apprentices.”
He added: “Their American accents become a symbolic fracture in the Windsor soundtrack.”
If Harry, Meghan and their two children were to decide to move back to the UK, which is reported to be unlikely, the children would lose their accents, as they’re still young.
If the Sussexes decide to stay in the US, but do reconcile and go home ti visit, then yes those American accents will most likely echo through the halls of the Palace with some cringing at the sharpness of their vowels.
